“Norths Tigers would like to congratulate former Ipswich Rugby League identity Peter Betros on his appointment as Chairman of the Queensland Rugby League.”
FROM an Ipswich referee to Queensland rugby league’s top job, Peter Betros has always been approachable and dedicated.
However, the newly-appointed Queensland Rugby League chairman will need his vast experience in his vital new role.
“Our biggest challenge at the moment is to establish good working relationships with the Australian Rugby League Commission,” Betros said after chairing his first meeting.
“They (the ARL Commission) are still feeling their way a bit.
“As Queensland Rugby League, we wish to establish better relations and communication lines with them.
“It’s probably not ideal at the moment. It can be improved.
“Our relationship with the commission is very important, making sure that Queensland is not being forgotten in the big picture.
“We have to make sure we keep our name to the forefront where we’ve been and deserve to be.”
Betros, 57, was elected yesterday. He replaced long-serving predecessor John McDonald who retired in September and finished his chairman stint yesterday.
The new QRL boss said his other main aim was strengthening league.
“I’m very keen to ensure that the game develops from the ground up,” Betros said.
“The game is very strong at the top but at the bottom, like every sport, I think we’re running through some problems at the moment. People being time-poor and money’s not easy at grassroots level.
“We’ve got to make sure our junior development programs and our pathway programs for our talented players are all in place and well resourced and volunteers are given as much assistance as they need.”
Betros is proud of his achievements, from a 30-year association with Ipswich.
“One of my strong points is I can talk to anyone,” the former Ipswich referees boss said.
“I listen to people and I talk to anyone. If there’s a problem and I can help them, I certainly will.
“You have to be open and honest with people.”
